While working at COMAR, I had several magazines that I was at least partially responsible for. For instance, when the publisher decided to eliminate one magazine and build another from the ground up, I got to do development. I was responsible for the initial layout, color and typographic choices of MetroValley magazine. Although not designing the logo, I was tasked with prototyping every different page in the magazine, with the help of the creative team at COMAR. The original Editor and Creative Director steered me into something not quite as cutting-edge as I would have liked, but still very forward-looking for West Virginia. I chose, edited and finalized the cover image in addition to laying out the cutlines.
One of the magazines that I was responsible for at COMAR, Inc was West Virginia Executive, which stands as the premier business magazine in the state. I was responsible for the photography and the illustration on this cover, which indexed the 50 most powerful West Virginians. When I arrived at COMAR, the magazine was 2 1/2 months behind, when I left, they were ahead 3 weeks.

I checked out the comic and in the beginning I was taken a bit off-guard. It seemed a bit to psuedo-metal for me, but I was wrong. By the last day, I was a fan and was sorry that it was over. Bob came with a real challenge; create a book design that didn’t get in the way of the comic, but added to it and represented it with an exceptional cover. I like it anyway, the idea was to make it homey and it is. (more…)
